Changes to the OATSIH BMT100 Initiative from 1 July 2009 PDF Print E-mail

What is happening to BMT100?

As part of the 2009 Federal Budget, a decision was made by the Australian Government to cease the Business Management Training for 100 Managers of Indigenous Health Services (BMT100) initiative on 30 June 2009, for all new funding applicants. Under the changed arrangements, no new funding for business management training will be provided through the BMT 100 initiative from 2009-10 onwards.

Why is BMT100 changing?

BMT100 has already met its goal of funding business management training for 100 Indigenous health service managers, having supported over 150 managers to commence or complete an approved course of study. At the same time, feedback OATSIH has received from the Indigenous health sector indicates that there is a need for training to be provided to other staff in their organisations, not just managers, and for that training to have a broader continuous quality improvement focus, rather than just business management training.

For these reasons, it was decided to cease BMT100 for new applicants, and to incorporate the successful aspects of BMT100 into a parallel program, the Training and Development Scheme (TDS) under the Establishing Quality Health Standards (EQHS), which has a continuous quality improvement focus.

When do the changes occur?

BMT100 will cease on 30 June 2009.

I am an existing recipient of BMT100 funding -how will these changes affect me?

There will be no impact on existing recipients of BMTlOO funding.

I have applied for BMT100 in the current funding round - how will these changes affect my application?

Successful applicants who applied for funding in the recent funding round via the BMT100 Administrator, the Northern Territory General Practice Education (NTGPE), will be transferred to the new Training and Development Scheme (TDS), which will continue to be managed by NTGPE. Applications received from 1 July 2009 will be considered under TDS. As with the BMT100 initiative, TDS funding through EQHS is available until 30 June 2011.

How is TDS different to BMT100?

TDS has broader eligibility criteria, and is available to all staff performing non-clinical functions within Indigenous health organisations (ie not just managers). A Short Course stream is also available for all staff (including clinical staff) in the Indigenous health organisations involved in achieving accreditation. Updated guidelines are available via NTGPE's website: www.bmt100.org.

What do I need to do as a result of these changes?

Nothing - any administrative changes will be handled by OATSIH and NTGPE.
